It is becoming increasingly apparent that most people could do with taking a food supplement that contains vitamin D. Vitamin D is essential for boosting a healthy immune system and so helping our bodies to fight off viruses and infections, for keeping our bones and muscles functioning in a healthy way, and to reduce depression that is particularly prevalent in the winter time. Most people do not get enough vitamin D naturally, which our skin absorbs from natural sunlight, because the weather isn’t sunny enough, we spend too much time indoors, or because we wear a high factor SPF sunscreen when we are outside (which is recommended).  

Does krill oil contain vitamin D?  

Yes – krill oil naturally contains vitamin D, as well as vitamin A and vitamin E. However, many krill oil supplements also contain added vitamin D because of the great health benefits gained from taking a vitamin D supplement. Moreover, because krill oil is naturally very high in omega-3 oils – particularly docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) – a krill oil supplement works very well with the health benefits of vitamin D due to the healthy attributes that come from these omega-3 oils.

These omega-3 oils present in krill oil are excellent at supporting brain health, improving mood, boosting the immune system and even helping prevent dry skin. Like vitamin D, our bodies don’t naturally produce omega-3 fatty acids, so we need to consume these from our diet. However, most adults don’t eat the recommended 10oz of fish per week, so are deficient in these essential omega-3s. This is why, like with vitamin D, it’s important for many adults to take a supplement containing these omega-3 oils, which krill oil has in abundance.  

Are you getting enough vitamin D?  

Vitamin D is often referred to as the ‘sunshine vitamin’ because the primary source for humans is directly from the sunlight, and it is absorbed through our skin. But as we’ve already discussed, many adults do not get enough vitamin D naturally. You can ask your doctor for a blood test to check your vitamin D levels, if you find you’re sluggish, lacking energy, get sick frequently or if you experience low moods. There are even at-home test kits for vitamin D available. The same can be said for omega-3 levels, which can be checked by your doctor, for similar symptoms, and can also be tested at home using self-test kits.  

Even without getting tested, if you find you’re often tired or feeling low, and if you know you don’t get enough sunshine or fish in your lifestyle, it’s highly likely that you’re deficient in levels of vitamin D and/or omega-3 fatty acids. But the good news is that krill oil is an excellent way of boosting both of these levels, and taking krill oil supplements is both natural and convenient.

As with any health symptoms you are experiencing, it is important to check with your doctor in order to rule out anything more serious that needs to be looked into. And it’s also a good idea to check with your doctor that it is safe for you to take krill oil supplements, particularly if you have a blood disorder, or if you take certain blood thinning medicines. Once you have done that, though, you may find that regularly taking a supplement of krill oil will have you feeling more like yourself in no time, with more energy and better moods, even through the winter months.
